War breaks out
- "As the Hydra war machine expands it's reach, one by one, the nations of Europe fall under it's shadow. None so far have withstood the onslaught."
- ―Radio broadcast[src]
The cause of the war is largely unknown, but it is stated that HYDRA had begun attacking and conquering half of Europe and other parts of the world, catching free nations off-guard.
The Allies (composed of all free nations) had been formed to boldly stand their ground against HYDRA with all their militaries and resources at their disposal during the war.
Both sides had created new weapons and gear to better fight on the frontlines of battle.
In order to turn the tide of the war, the Allies had launched Operation Rebirth, a secret military program that creates supersoldies from the Super Soldier Serum led by Dr. Abraham Erskine. The result was successful which it created by Captain America out from a stick-thin Steve Rogers. But the Super Soldier Serum's specs and samples were lost and Erskine had died, leaving Cap the only true Super Soldier.
Despite that, Captain America had contributed victories for the Allies against HYDRA, which is led by the Red Skull, who greatly despises him.
HYDRA had tried to duplicate the Super Soldier Serum to create their own supersoldiers, but weren't successful and only made imperfect versions of the serum.
In 1943, while on a mission to defeat Baron Zemo in Italy, Captain America discovered one of Zemo's latest nightmares, Virus X. Intending to infect and annihilate the Allied forces, the Baron was stopped by Cap. In the ensuing fight, a large batch of the Virus was drenched upon Zemo, adhering his mask right to his face and infecting his vital bodily systems.
On his mission to Norway, Captain America and Bucky had led the Howling Commandos in a raid on the Red Skull's base in their attempt to stop him from building a doomsday weapon. It turns out that Red Skull had found a way to access the Bifrost Bridge his plan to use the creatures from the Asgardian realms and unleashed them against the Alles. But his plans were stopped by the Super Soldier and his partner.
When his fortress crumble, the Red Skull had vowed that he'll have his revenge on Captain America and the world then left for his prototype rocket plane he built. Cap and Bucky had followed him and were ready to get him, but the leader of HYDRA had cackled and activated the self-destruct sequence before ejecting into the skies.
Captain America had survived the explosion and fell on ice but Bucky didn't (but was later revived because the Cosmic Cube Cap touched in the 21st century).
End of the war
After Cap and Bucky's "deaths", the Allies and the Holwing Commandos had grieved and mourned, then they decided to win this war against HYDRA for the two heroes.
On the final years of the war, the Allies had won truimphantly against HYDRA, leaving its remnants gone into hiding over the decades until in the 21st century. The organization was taken ower by Baron Strucker, who waited for a new chance for global domination.
After the war, the Allies put up a small war memorial statue of Captain America and Bucky in Ellis Island near the Statue of Liberty. Then they returned to their normal lives and activities over the years.
Despite HYDRA's defeat, they endured for years and been growing in power daily, forcing the world to form S.H.I.E.L.D., an international peacekeeping organization bent on keeping the peace and order.
