Howling Commandos

The Howling Commandos or Howlers was an elite combat unit of Able Company, consisting of Allied soldiers used for special, high-value black ops missions behind enemy lines in World War II, often against HYDRA.

History

World War II

During World War II, the Howling Commandos are hired under Captain America's orders to assist him on missions against HYDRA. While on a mission in Norway, they helped Captain America and Bucky to get past HYDRA troops and defenses into the Red Skull's base. They remained behind to guard outside if anyone inside attempted to escape.

As Captain America and Bucky disappeared in ice, they grieved for their death after the war. Eventually the members have died and Logan has left and became Wolverine, joining the X-Men.

Present

On the land of the dead, their spirits were present there, tormenting the Captain for leaving them on Norway. As Steve realizes that the real ones he once knew wouldn't give up fighting and wonders if Bucky wasn't dead since his spirit wasn't there and so was Logan's.

Trivia

• The only surviving Howling Commando is James Howlett.
• In the comics, Nick Fury led the Howling Commandos in World War II and serves as the present-day director of S.H.I.E.L.D (due to the fact that writers eventually had to explain that Fury used an "Infinity Serum" to extend his lifespan). In The Avenger's Earth's Mightiest Heroes, Nick Fury serves as the present-day director of S.H.I.E.L.D., but father Jack Fury led the Howling Commandos in World War II instead.
